This reads like a dream, like maybe that first night never happened in this realm - but good reminder overall that nothing can be replicated. Also your desire to walk the camino reminded me of one of Juan's most favorite movies, beyond Princess Bride ha,, was a movie called The Way, produced and written by Emilio Estevez. I had never of Fado, but was intrigued after reading your piece and found some examples on YouTube. Thank goodness for the internet. It certainly does capture a feeling of longing. I would agree with your professor about trying to recapture memories and your experience sums it up beautifully.
🤗 Thank you, Vicki! And yes, thank goodness for the internet--I love how it can take us places mentally when we can’t travel physically. I’m honored to have introduced you to fado!
Wow, this is so terrific, Sam. Love this: “The places you’ve been tend to move on without you.” 🥺 Beautiful piece, and I’ve just gone down a ‘rabbit hole’ googling Fado!
Thank you, Jolene! :) I've also been going down the fado-google rabbit hole...there are a couple good fado tracks on Spotify, but I might have to look up live performances on YouTube. The studio-produced versions don't have the same effect for me.
Thank you for the sharing the gift of your evocative writing. This made me want to reread a poem: Fado, by Jane Hirshfield.
Thank you so much for reading, Erin, and for mentioning this poem--I had never heard of it and just gave it a read. It’s gorgeous.

Ooo thanks so much for suggesting this movie, Trilety! I hadn't heard of it and will definitely have to check it out!

It's sad how a bad experience can taint a good one. I remember ruining a couple of my favourite eateries by bringing boring people there.
Oh no--mothing can ruin a meal like bad conversation. Maybe you can cancel it out by going back with someone especially exciting!

Love your writing style! This makes me yearn for Portugal even more than I already was.
Thank you, Kade! Portugal is an incredible place to visit, and I hope you make it there--come back for recommendations when you do :)
