I sent a note to your P.O. knowing you were relocating, but I hoped it would find you. Maybe you will get it one day. Ha! And yes, it brought back memories!
Travel guides are not something I use, given my love of serendipity, chaos, and irritable border guards who can go from zero to Idi Amin in 3 second, but cranks like me notwithstanding, congrats nonetheless.
I do love travelogues, however, and no territory is off limits. My all time favorite is the Audible version of Colin Thubron’s Shadow of the Silk Road. It is superb in every way and a benchmark for travelogues. I was long a Paul Theroux fan until he got cranky, but William Least-Heat Moon writes joyfull travelogues that make me think he must be a wonderful travel companion.
Yes, traveling without a guidebook (or really with no plan at all) definitely has its merits, too! I'll have to put Shadow of the Silk Road on my reading list.
So far, I made it back to the home hearth every time after flailing around the world as I do. So far. I suspect in a few more years, the kids will get me ID chipped so the authorities will know to which care facility I belong.
One of history’s great shortcomings is that no security cameras were installed in caravanserai to record all the comings and goings along with the conversations and trading. The closest we will ever imagine it is the Mos Eisley cantina of the famous Star Wars bar scene on the planet Tatooine.
Disclaimer: I had to look up the Star Wars details, because I may be a geek, but not a geek who is that dedicated.
Signed up and ready for it! 💚
So happy to have you aboard, Louise! ☺️
